The story begins with the fox and the crane meeting in a forest. The fox is very hungry and notices the crane has a piece of cheese in its beak. The fox asks the crane to share the cheese, but the crane refuses. The fox then comes up with a plan to help the crane get the cheese out of its beak.
The fox suggests that the crane come to his house and he will help the crane get the cheese out. The crane agrees and follows the fox to his house. Once there, the fox offers the crane a drink of wine from a narrow-necked bottle. The crane is unable to drink the wine and the fox is able to get the cheese out of the crane's beak.
The crane is so grateful for the fox's help that it offers to repay the favor. The fox then asks the crane to come to his house again and the crane agrees. The next day, the crane brings a pot of soup to the fox's house and the fox is able to enjoy a delicious meal. The fox and the crane become friends and the story ends with them living happily ever after.
